snowy

Here's my deck this morning, covered with the few inches of snow we've been getting in the last few days. It actually amazes me that we don't have more.

I've been living in Central Alberta since 1973, when my mom and dad broke up. Originally I'm from the Sunshine Coast, near Vancouver BC, where January brings spring showers and by February, the flowers are starting to bloom. Alberta was definitely a culture shock!

January and February are typically the coldest months of the year here, although December can give us a run for our money too. This year we've had a few weeks of -37°C, but the majority of the time it's been -20°C or lower. We've had very little snow, but what we have had has still confused some of our drivers, who refuse to slow down or keep any distance between themselves and the cars ahead of them.

Two of the worst offenders are teenaged boys with something to prove, or women in SUV's and UUV's. I guess the women think that they can just throw it in 4H, but I've seen enough slide through intersections to know that that isn't necessarily the case. Maybe in extreme cold, when the roads have some traction, but let it warm up just a little? That's when you really need to watch.

Today I have my first sales appointment since before Christmas, and I'll be on the phone trying to make more, unless my voice is too raspy from this cold. No sense scaring people off, lol.

  4. snow may be pretty to look at but it certainly is a pain to have to move around (i.e. shovel, plow, blow, etc)

  7. I stay home when it snows or the roads are icy. I do not trust other drivers. I wish it would snow here~

  8. Your deck looks like a beautiful winter wonderland, Kate. It's cold and dry in my ville, w/ snow expected this weekend. Getting around is problematic here if you don't own a car. Most of the cab drivers hail from warm climates & are unfamiliar w/ winter. They are so deathly afraid of driving in the snow that often they refuse to answer the phone to pick up passengers. It's crazy!

Enjoy yours while it's still beautiful!

  10. I've always loved the snow. It seems to hide all sin . . . for example, if you never ever painted or stained your deck -- nobody would be able to tell from the photo.

    HERE IN WESTERN WASHINGTON TODAY
The mountain snow melt and constant rain is causing horrific flooding. At least the rain stopped for right now {big sigh of relief} giving us a few hours of reprieve with brighter skies. Eastern Washington (where my best buddy Faerheart lives) has more than 4 feet of snow!

  11. I don't drive on it anymore than I have too. Too many years of fighting it when I drove a school bus. Now I just stay home and enjoy myself.

  12. Nice picture! We finally got just a little bit of snow, just enough to be a tease. I haven't even be able to put the truck in 4 wheel drive yet.

  13. I remember those idiots when I had to drive in the snow and ice. Now in AZ when it rains people get sooo spooked. It makes me nuts. We don't know what rain is! lol

  16. It was like a warm spring day here today but we have those cold rainy days too.We very rarely if ever get any negative degree temps here. The snow is pretty but theres no way I could work and drive in it so I am happy where I'm at.

  19. It looks beautiful..and cold! You should see drivers around here when there's a little ice or snow (very rare). They crash into each other all the time! We had a small ice storm about a month ago and there were accidents all over Dallas. They don't know how to drive here in those conditions, lol.

  20. I've visited central Alberta...in the fall. It was beautiful. So's the snow, as long as I'm inside by a roaring fire. Stay safe,

  21. Bill and I have said the same about people in 4H. They don't really understand the mechanics of it. It doesn't make them safer to drive FAST in bad weather, lol. It just helps them from getting stuck. That should be explained to each person at purchase, probably save some lives.
