pricks!

Alright, maybe I'm the prick instead.
I forgot to renew my registration (license plates) in December, and just the other day I was thinking, do I have $78 to do this? But then I forgot because I was sick, then I worked yesterday and again today, and the county cops got me on the way home . $230!
Yanno, I was just thinking that January would be finally be easier, because Bill has three paydays and I have a lot of sales appointments lined up, but this ticket is going to wipe out a chunk of it.
Other than that stupid ticket, the day went pretty well.

  1. That is an expensive ticket, I'm sorry to hear this!

The bright side is that you do, or will, have the spare cash to pay it and that is a silver lining in this (expensive) cloud.

  6. Ouch! I hate when they do that! Maybe you will win some extra cash to help cover it. That would be awesome!! :-) Sorry about those pricks. They COULD be fighting REAL crime, but, they don't seem to like to do that.

  8. Sorry to hear about that – I have a dreadful memory, so you have my sympathy. But as TP says, you’re less likely to forget next time. When I get my reminder, I either pay immediately, or if I can’t, I keep the reminder in clear sight until I do. Otherwise I’d just forget.

As to those who say the authorities should cut you a bit of slack, I would say this: I’ve known mates of my own who deliberately haven’t paid their vehicle tax, and would reckon the “I forgot, officer, honest!” excuse would be a good line. It isn’t accepted of course, because otherwise no one would bother paying until they were pulled up.

If you’re going to accept the principle of a vehicle tax at all, you can’t say “You should only pay it if the cops catch you.” The police in this case had no idea if you’d genuinely forgotten or are in the habit of avoiding paying.

Sorry folks, but if you’re going to have a law, you enforce it, or you may as well forget about it altogether.

  9. Damn, $230?! That's gong to hurt. Here's hoping Karma sends some sort of windfall your way to make up for it!

  11. Unless things have changed in Alberta since I lived there I am not so sure your insurance would have covered you had you had an accident while driving an unregistered vehicle.

In BC your insurance and registration is done at the same time. We have the option to pay our insurance premiums monthly, which is what I do, put it doesn't automatically renew without you going in and doing the paperwork.

$230 sucks ...but your silver lining is that you didn't have an accident that involved injuring someone who would have sued you for everything you have.

  13. Sorry about the ticket, but be glad you don't live in Nebraska. The cost of your ticket is what we pay PER CAR plus about $50...and we have two...per year. It's all relative, methinks.

  14. Gee, I drove with an expired plate for about a year and a half about five years ago...

Cathy, the vehicle is still registered, it's just an unpaid fee. If you hit someone and left the scene and a witness saw you, the cops would still know where to come to haul you off to jail :-) But yeah, insurance might not be in force. Likely different from province to province.

  15. Wow! Around here that would earn you a 'fix-it' ticket, with a nominal fine -- something like $20. It is called a 'fix-it' ticket because it used to not even be a fine unless you failed to get it fixed and send in proof signed by a police officer in a timely fashion.
