companies that pay OT are awesome
Happy New Year!
Yesterday was Bill's first payday, and it was an excellent way to finish off the year. It was so much more than we'd expected, just because this new company pays for every minute that he works overtime. At his last position (for Evergreen Tank Rentals) he was never paid for this. In fact, even though they owed him for 200 hours of unpaid overtime, they took away his ability to text me when he downloaded a $6 game for his phone (and told them about it. He'd been stuck on a oilrig lease in the middle of nowhere for over seven hours.)
Anyway, as long as this new company keeps it up, we should be in the black in no time. I'm not sure what college classes I'll be taking yet (or when) so I'm not sure where my income will be, but I hope I can drop down to working two or three days a week.
I'm working today, from 12-6:30. That's time and a half for me, and I hope the shift goes by quickly.

ReplyDeleteI agree that overtime rates rock! Increasingly here emplyees are being offered contracts with flat rates (i.e no OT) which totally sucks.
ReplyDeleteKate, I don't mean to start trouble, and it is likely Bill doesn't want to make any waves or get a reputation as a trouble maker, but the failure to pay overtime is a huge issue right now resulting in multi-million dollar class action lawsuits. 200 hours is sufficient interest to hire an attorney to take it on contingency: he or she makes a few phone calls, maybe sends a letter, and he or she gets a percentage of whatever Bill gets to compensate him for the 200 hours. It is a wonderful deal for Evergreen, too, because maybe paying Bill will avoid them paying much, much more both in damages and in fines. These things are often handled very, very quietly, so Bill might be able to do it without risking any adverse effect to his current employment (which is often the fear that stops people from pursuing overtime claims).

Isn't it nice to be paid for the work you do. What an interesting concept.
ReplyDeleteWow, I'd love some overtime. My job is categorized as "Salaried, Non-Exempt," which means I'm eligible for overtime, but only if it is approved first. Naturally, it's never approved, so I do my best not to work it. :)
